Pulsefield

A living canvas where news becomes color, motion, and light. Pulsefield is an AI representation of the news—a real-time visualization that transforms the constant stream of global headlines into a living, breathing work of digital art. Created by Joe Henzi, this fun project is a gift for our donors and friends to enjoy. What is the current pulse?

What is Pulsefield?

Ever wanted to watch the pulse of the world in real-time? Pulsefield is an AI representation of the news that turns boring headlines into something actually cool! Instead of scrolling through endless news feeds, Pulsefield shows you current events as colorful, pulsing "blobs" that float and dance around in a three-dimensional space. Each blob is a topic cluster—groups of related news stories that our AI has intelligently grouped together. It's like watching the news have a party!

How It Works

Here's the fun part: Pulsefield gobbles up news from major sources, processes each headline through our AI (powered by GPT-OSS 120b), and figures out what topics are hot. These topics then become soft, glowing orbs that do all sorts of cool stuff:

  • Grow and shrink based on how many stories are covering a topic (bigger = more buzz!)
  • Pulse with intensity when breaking news hits—watch them throb!
  • Attract each other when topics are related (like "holiday shopping" and "retail sales" hanging out together)
  • Repel apart when topics are unrelated, keeping things nice and organized
  • Change color based on sentiment—greens and blues for the good news, reds for the not-so-good, creating a visual mood map of what's happening in the world

Want to explore?

  • Hover over any blob (or tap on mobile) to see more about that topic—like growth in the last 24 hours, sentiment breakdowns, and what's driving the conversation
  • Click or tap a blob to see all the headlines for that topic, with links to the actual stories. You can use this to read the news!

It's like having a news feed that's actually fun to explore!

The Technology Behind It

Built with a whole bunch of fun tech, Pulsefield is powered by:

  • GPT-OSS 120b: Our AI brain that makes sense of all the news
  • Real-time processing: Constantly chomping through news feeds like a hungry data monster
  • Machine learning magic: Uses advanced AI to understand how stories relate to each other
  • Physics simulation: Makes those blobs move naturally with force-field dynamics (it's like they have their own gravity!)
  • Live updates: Streams changes instantly so you see the pulse in real-time
  • Scalable architecture: Handles thousands of articles without breaking a sweat
  • Mobile-responsive design: Works great on your phone, tablet, or desktop
  • Temporal dynamics: Tracks how topics grow, shrink, and evolve over time

All built with open-source technologies because we believe in sharing the fun!

Tech Stack: React, Three.js, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, Python, GPT-OSS 120b, Machine Learning (HDBSCAN, UMAP, Sentence Transformers)

Why It's Cool

Let's be honest—reading the news can be overwhelming. Pulsefield gives you a totally different way to see what's happening in the world. Instead of boring lists, you get to see patterns, relationships, and how topics evolve in real-time. It's both useful (you can actually understand what's going on) and beautiful (it's art, after all!). Plus, it's just fun to watch!

A Fun Project by Joe

This is Joe Henzi's brainchild—a passion project that combines his love for technology, AI (including GPT-OSS 120b), and making cool stuff. Built from scratch, Pulsefield brings together data engineering, machine learning, real-time systems, and interactive visualization into something that's both smart and beautiful.

Pulsefield is always evolving, with new features and improvements being added regularly. It's where art meets technology meets data—proof that code can create something genuinely cool and fun!
